This training reshaped how I approach mentoring undergraduate students. My main takeaway was that clear expectations, communicated in writing at the very start, serve a student far better than good intentions offered halfway through. I came away more attentive to the role of structure and healthy boundaries in a close mentoring relationship, and to a mentor's responsibility to make the terms of the work explicit rather than leave them assumed. Good mentoring, I was reminded, is not only about the mathematics; it is also about creating a clear, supportive, and professional environment in which a student can grow.
Fundamentals of POGIL Workshop
June 24–25, 2026. Introductory training in POGIL's learner-centered, guided-inquiry approach to teaching. Supported by a UTM Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Faculty Development Microgrant.
In June 2026, I completed The POGIL Project's two-day Fundamentals of Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning workshop, supported by a CTL Microgrant. What struck me most was its deliberate emphasis on process, not just answers. In an age where students can rush straight to a result — often with AI and other tools — POGIL makes room for the struggle and the reasoning that learning actually depends on, while building the teamwork, communication, and evidence-based thinking that a traditional math classroom rarely has space for. I'm now working to bring guided-inquiry approaches into my differential equations, numerical analysis, and calculus courses.
25 - 26 AY AI and Me: Navigating Generative AI for Higher Education Faculty
The workshop reframed AI literacy as a teachable skill set rather than something to simply permit or prohibit — AI as "augmented intelligence" that supports human thinking, not a replacement for it, with the emphasis on the abilities AI struggles to replicate: intuition, creativity, critical thinking, and ethical judgment. Much of it was practical: teaching students to write effective prompts (instruction, context, input, and desired output), to evaluate what AI returns rather than accept it uncritically, and to compare tools rather than assume they all perform equally. It also grounded the limitations students most need to understand — hallucination, bias, privacy, and the risk that over-reliance erodes their own critical thinking. What stayed with me was the central point: human validation is always necessary, and that is itself something we have to teach.
24 - 25 AY Grant Writing Basics Workshops @ UT Martin
A workshop on the fundamentals of proposal development: preparation, the standard components of a grant proposal, and drafting strategy. As someone building an externally funded research and undergraduate-research program, I took this to strengthen the proposal-writing side of that work.
MAA ProjectNExT Azure '24 cohort
Project NExT was my entry point into the mathematical community when I started as faculty, straight out of graduate school. It opened up a side of academic life no one really tells you about — navigating tenure, balancing research and teaching, finding your footing as a new faculty member. Through Project NExT and MAA Connect I built a network of colleagues across career stages and institution types, got involved in the MAA, and found opportunities I wouldn't have known to look for. It reshaped how I think about both teaching and mentoring, and it's a large part of how I came to serve as Vice Chair for Programs for the MAA Southeastern Section.
